Halloween is such a fun time of year—costumes, candy, and cute photo ops galore!
But while we’re enjoying the spooky season, it’s important to make sure our furry friends stay safe and stress-free.
From tempting treats to scary sounds, here are some simple Halloween safety tips to help your pup have a pawsitively good time!
1. Keep the Candy Out of Paw’s Reach 🍫
We know it’s hard to resist those puppy eyes — but Halloween candy is a big no-no. Chocolate, xylitol, and some sugar-free treats can be toxic.
Tip: Store candy up high, out of sight, and remind trick-or-treaters: no sharing with pups!
2. Beware of Decorations 🕯️
Those flickering candles, hanging cobwebs, and spooky inflatables might look great, but they can be hazardous if your dog decides to investigate.
Tip: Use flameless LED candles instead of real ones, and keep electrical cords and small decorations away from curious noses and wagging tails.
3. Choose Comfy (and Safe!) Costumes 👻
Dressing up your dog is adorable—but comfort and safety come first! Before the big night, let your pup try their costume on and make sure it’s:
Not too tight or restrictive
Free of dangling parts, they could chew on
Made from breathable fabric
If your dog seems uncomfortable or stressed, skip the costume and opt for a festive bandana or bow tie instead.
4. Manage the Doorbell Chaos 🔔
The constant ringing of the doorbell and stream of trick-or-treaters can be overwhelming for pups.
Tip: Give your dog a quiet, cozy spot in another room. Soft music or TV can help. If they get anxious, it’s totally fine to keep them away from the door during peak trick-or-treat hours.
5. Stay Visible on Evening Walks 🌙
If you’re heading out for a Halloween stroll, make sure your dog is visible in the dark.
Tip: Pick bright or light-colored gear, carry a small flashlight, and wear reflective clothing yourself. Safety + style = paw-fect combo!
6. Treats They Can Enjoy 🦴
Don’t let your pup feel left out of the fun! Give them their own special treats, like pumpkin dog biscuits or a little dollop of plain canned pumpkin (which is great for digestion).
7. Update Their ID Tags 🐾
With all the excitement, it’s always good to double-check your dog’s ID tag and microchip information—just in case they sneak out when the door opens.
🎃 Have a Fang-tastic Halloween!
With a few precautions and a lot of love, your pup can have just as much fun as the humans this spooky season. Snap a few festive photos, tag us on IG (@sniffandbark), and let’s see those adorable costumes and wagging tails!d

I leash my little dog and hold it to prevent her from running out. When she was a puppy she thankfully ran next door to their dog so I could easily get her. I never let that happen again.
